Does a high score cost more? Here, mostly not

The ten highest-scoring places sit between 93 and 97 on the Harry Hungry score, and nine of the ten carry the Smart Spend badge. Their Worth It scores run from 79 to 83. The tenth, idashi Omakase in Brooklyn, scores 93 with a Worth It of 79 and is badged Occasion Worthy instead.

The implication is that in sushi, quality and value are not pulling in opposite directions at the top end. Craft Omakase in Austin leads on 97 with a Worth It of 83. If you assume the best-reviewed room will be the poorest value, this data does not support that. One caveat: the price field is empty for all of these ten, so the Worth It score is the only value signal we can show for them.

Which city does it best?

Cities with at least twelve scored places for this cuisine, ranked by average Harry score.

New York leads, but the gap to London is small

New York has the highest average score at 82.6 across 89 places, with London next on 80.5 across 68. Los Angeles follows on 80, then Chicago on 78.2 and Sydney on 77.8. Behind them, Seattle, Austin and San Francisco sit between 77.6 and 76.7.

An average rewards depth, not just a few stars, so New York's lead says something about how reliable a random pick is there. San Jose is at the other end on 66.7 across 54 places, and its best entry is a wagyu shabu house rather than a sushi counter, which suggests that city is thin on strong sushi specifically. Averages say little about any one restaurant, so treat them as the odds of a decent night, not a guarantee.

Where the value actually sits

The value picks list is led by Doma Sushi in San Francisco, with a Worth It of 84 on a Harry Hungry score of 88. That is the one place where value outruns quality by a visible margin. The rest of the list is made up of strong all-rounders: Osaka Sushi NYC and Te Isshoku Sushi both score 96 with a Worth It of 83, Craft Omakase scores 97 with 83, and SAI Sushi & Sake in Seattle scores 93 with 83.

So the practical split is this. If you want the lowest-risk good-value meal, the 96 and 97 scorers are the stronger bet. If you want a quieter, cheaper-feeling night, Doma Sushi fits. Iki sekai omakase in New York rounds out the list on 96 and 82.

Awards point one way, reviewers often another

Michelin Guide recognition is the most common acclaim in the data, at 28 mentions, followed by The Infatuation on 8, then James Beard Foundation and Time Out on 6 each. Eater 38 has 5, Travelers Choice 3, Eater 2 and World's 50 Best 1.

Yet in the top ten, only Craft Omakase, Ogawa Miami and Sushi Kaneyoshi carry Michelin Guide acclaim. The other seven have none listed, and several score 94 to 96 anyway. Acclaim and crowd approval overlap but are not the same thing. A place without a plaque can still be rated extremely well by diners, and the reverse can also be true. Use acclaim as one input, not a filter.

When Google and Yelp disagree, read the gap

Four places show a wide split between platforms. Hudson Sushi is 4.8 on Google from 1,208 reviews but 3.9 on Yelp from 188. Moshi Moshi MiMo in Miami is 4.7 on Google from 6,655 reviews against 3.8 on Yelp from 975. Tokyo Sushi in San Jose is 4.3 against 3.3, and Maki Toki in Austin is 4.2 against 3.3.

In every case Google is the kinder platform, by about a point. That pattern suggests Google captures a broader, more casual crowd, while Yelp reviewers are harsher. It does not tell you who is right. The Yelp counts for Hudson Sushi are small, so that gap is the least certain. Treat a split as a prompt to read recent reviews before booking.

The short version

Pick the city by depth, with New York and London the safest bets, then pick the place by Worth It score, because the top scorers rarely cost you on value. Where Google and Yelp split, read recent reviews first.
