Miami's best scores belong to unfussy places, not the award lists

Of 839 places scored in Miami, 56 clear 90, and the top ten owe little to critics. Value is tightly bunched, with one clear outlier.

What does a 90-plus score actually get you in Miami?

We have scored 839 places in Miami, and 56 of them reach 90 or above. That is a small group, and the top ten sits inside it, running from 96 down to 93. The spread is narrow, so the order within the ten matters far less than being in it. Treat the ten as a single tier rather than a ladder.

The mix is the interesting part. Sushi, Peruvian, pizza, Italian, vegan and a bar all appear. There is no single cuisine dominating the top, which suggests the score rewards consistency of execution over any particular style of cooking.

Do awards and high scores point to the same places?

Only partly. Ogawa Miami, our highest scorer on 96, is the one top-ten place carrying acclaim, from the Michelin Guide and Time Out. The other nine have no acclaim listed in our data. Their scores come from the review platforms alone.

Across the city, the acclaim is out there: 29 places carry a Michelin Guide mention, 21 are on Eater 38, 20 have Travelers Choice, and 15 are in Time Out. James Beard Foundation appears for 4, World's 50 Best for 3 and NYT for 2. If you want critics' approval, use those lists. If you want what diners rate most consistently, the top ten is a different and largely separate set of names.

Where is the value in Miami?

Value scores are tightly bunched. Nine of the top ten have a Worth It score of 81 or 82, and nearly all carry the Smart Spend badge. The exception is Sunset Point Wood Fired Pizzeria Key Biscayne, which has a Worth It score of 84 and the Great Value badge, alongside a Harry Hungry score of 94.

The practical reading is that high quality here does not cost you much in value terms. Ogawa Miami, at 96 for quality, still manages 82 for value. Price tiers are only confirmed for some places: 48 at $$, 23 at $$$$, 13 at $$$ and 13 at $. The top ten have no price tier recorded, so we will not guess at what a meal costs.

When Google and Yelp disagree, who is right?

Neither, exactly. They are measuring different crowds. Garden House has 4.8 on Google from 3645 reviews but 3.8 on Yelp from 301. DIOR Café Miami shows the same gap: 4.8 on Google from 7587 reviews, 3.8 on Yelp from 440. Novecento sits at 4.7 on Google from 6884 and 3.7 on Yelp from 558.

A full point of difference is large. It suggests these are places that please visitors and occasion diners more than the people who write long Yelp reviews. Joey's Rosticceria & Bar reverses the pattern in volume: 4.5 on Google from only 265 reviews, against 3.5 on Yelp from 651. Read a thin Google count with caution.

What about cheap, casual Mexican?

Mexican is the cuisine we can describe most firmly: 18 places average 82.2. That is a respectable but not exceptional figure, and well below the top-ten scores. The best of them is Oh Mexico Taco Shop Ocean Drive.

This tells you something about how to use the data. A cuisine average is a guide to the typical outcome, not to the best one. Picking a Mexican place at random gives you a decent meal; picking from the top of our list gives you something better. We have no neighbourhood comparison to offer, because the address detail is not there to support one.

Where the review platforms disagree

Places with at least 150 reviews on both platforms and a gap of 0.4 to 1.0 stars. Yelp is used for US cities, Tripadvisor elsewhere.

The short version

Start with the top ten if you want reliably high quality, and add Ogawa Miami if critics' approval matters. Trust Google scores less when Yelp is a full point lower.
