New Orleans built its reputation on raw oysters, not raw tuna, so sushi here has always had to argue for a seat at a crowded table. Magazine Street carries that argument now, one unglamorous counter at a time — more convincingly than the newer omakase rooms importing Tokyo ceremony to a city that already trusts its own Gulf seafood, including the Vietnamese fishing community that built Viet-Cajun crawfish. Judge sushi here like anywhere else: seasoned rice, fish held at temperature. A ceremony is not a substitute for either.
