London's best scores come with surprisingly sensible value

Across 888 scored London places, the top of the table pairs high quality with solid Worth It numbers, and review platforms disagree most on curry houses.

Is a top score in London also a good-value one?

Mostly, yes. Of the ten highest Harry Hungry scores, eight carry the Smart Spend badge, and their Worth It scores sit between 82 and 83. Row on 5 leads on 97 with a Worth It of 83. Evelyn's Table, Restaurant St. Barts and Tania's Of Hampstead follow on 95.

The exceptions are Da Terra Restaurant (95, Worth It 78) and Muse by Tom Aikens (93, Worth It 77). Both are badged Occasion Worthy, which reads as a fair description: excellent, but you pay for the evening. If you want the best food without feeling fleeced, the Smart Spend names are the safer bet.

Where does the value sit if you are not chasing the top ten?

E3 Vegan in Bow tops our value picks with a Worth It of 84, on a Harry Hungry score of 85. That is the only entry in that list where value outranks quality in the numbers, and it suggests you do not need a headline score to get a good deal.

The rest of the value list is familiar: Row on 5, Tania's Of Hampstead, Evelyn's Table, Restaurant St. Barts and Sollip, all between 82 and 83. Value in London, on this evidence, is not confined to cheap places. It also shows up in places that score very highly and charge in proportion.

What does acclaim tell you that the scores do not?

Of the places scored, 67 reach 90 or above, and the acclaim data shows who has been noticed by critics. The Michelin Guide appears 56 times, World's 50 Best 16 times and the National Restaurant Awards 11 times.

But acclaim is not a requirement for a high score. Tania's Of Hampstead, El Alquimista and Namaste Village Twickenham all reach 94 or 95 with no acclaim listed. Those are the crowd's favourites rather than the critics', and they are worth the same attention as the decorated names. Restaurant St. Barts, Da Terra Restaurant and Akoko each combine three sources of acclaim with a score of 94 or 95.

What this city eats, by score

Cuisines with at least twelve scored places, in order of how many there are.

CuisinePlacesAverageBest scorer
Italian1786.2Osteria romana
japanese1282.8Maki & Ramen

Which cuisines does the data back?

Italian is the deepest pool in our cuisine comparison: 17 places, an average score of 86.2, with Osteria romana the best of them. Japanese follows with 12 places averaging 82.8, led by Maki & Ramen.

Take those averages as a guide to consistency rather than a ranking of cuisines. Only two cuisines are compared here, so the data cannot say whether Italian beats everything else in London. It does suggest that picking an Italian place at random carries less risk than picking a Japanese one.

Why do Google and Tripadvisor disagree about curry houses?

The biggest platform splits are all Indian restaurants. Tikkas Oxford Circus has a perfect 5 on Google from 208 reviews but 4.1 on Tripadvisor from 599. Leads Eatery Indian Restaurant & Takeaway has 4.9 on Google and 4 on Tripadvisor.

N1 Grill & Curry House and Aladin Indian Restaurant both have 4.8 on Google against 3.8 on Tripadvisor, with 2365 Tripadvisor reviews shown for each. Aladin's Google count of 16786 makes its figure hard to dismiss. The pattern suggests Google ratings run generous for these places, so treat a near-perfect Google score as a starting point and check the other platform.

Where the review platforms disagree

Places with at least 150 reviews on both platforms and a gap of 0.4 to 1.0 stars. Yelp is used for US cities, Tripadvisor elsewhere.

The short version

Start with the Smart Spend names in the top ten, where quality and value line up. Treat near-perfect Google ratings with caution when Tripadvisor is a full point lower.
