New Orleans is the most generous city for cheap eating. The po-boy — properly done, not the tourist version — is one of the great sandwiches in American eating. The Central Grocery muffuletta is expensive for what it is; the imitations on Magazine Street are better value. The Vietnamese community in the eastern suburbs does cheap, excellent pho that nobody writes about.
