LA lunch is underrated because the city never rushes it. The best lunch in LA is the Mexican counter in a strip mall where the caldo is made that morning and costs eleven dollars. The taco truck outside the auto shop is for lunch. The Venice Beach salad situation is for visitors who have confused eating outside with eating well.
